Fashion: The Man From U.N.C.L.E

The Man From U.N.C.L.E (2015) provided such a great costume design by Joanna Johnston (Love Actually, Forrest Gump, and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.) I loved the fashion in this movie so much I decided to talk about it over a collection I created in Polyvore.

30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and partially 60’s were really problematic years when discussing social rights. Racism, sexism and discrimination were alive and pumping. But if there’s something I would save from those years (besides some great movies) is the fashion. I have always been a fan of the classic vintage style.

The famous movie that recreates the famous TV Show of the same name is settled in the 1960’s. Joanna Johnston talked about the many inspirations she took from Vogue issues from 1966 and 1968 as well as specifics such as Victoria Vinciguerra’s style referenced by Marisa Berenson and Veruschka.

While Illya Kuryakin’s famous turtlenecks also appeared in the movie being used by Armie Hammer (I love him so much!) the hat, for example, was inspired by Jean-Paul Belmondo’s hat in À bout de souffle (Breathless).

The movie displays a variety of colors commonly used in the 60’s even though a lot of what Johnston used to dress Elizabeth Debicki (Victoria) and Alicia Vikander (Gaby) are pieces of clothes you can find nowadays in your local extra expensive brand shop. Gaby’s earrings, for example, are Marni and her sunglasses, House of Holland.

Both women style is also very different. While Gaby, a communist young mechanic from East Europe dresses in these very clear, fresh, young colors with a young style. Victoria’s wardrobe is almost exclusively black and white throughout the film.

A while ago after watching the movie I felt terribly inspired and decided to do a collection based on the movie. I’ll leave you with it!

Random topic: The Big Wedding and Whitewashing

Hey guys! I have been thinking about doing this for a while now. I wanted to start a sort of section (?) in my blog where I discuss or more like write about random topics. Sometimes I want to write about things here but I feel like I can’t because they come from nowhere. Like maybe about a movie that premiered a long ago and I just watched. Or an old book, or something about Harry Potter, you get the idea?

Anyway yesterday I watched The Big Wedding (2013) with Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, and Susan Sarandon between other known actors (Ben Barnes, Amanda Seyfried, Katherine Heigl, etc.) It called my attention for the amount of great actors it had and also because I love Robert De Niro.

It was a really bad movie overall, the plot was predictable, full of jokes that had the intention of making you laugh but failed miserably and kind of aimless as well. Like a really, really bad comedy you knew it was going to be bad because no one knows about it and you thought you might have seen one of the actors in one of Grey’s Anatomy’s episodes but you’re not quite sure except this movie had A list actors that you can’t really understand how is it that they ended up agreeing to make this movie in the first place.

But that was not what bothered me. Yeah because if I’m going to start this Random Section thing in my blog might as well do it to complain about things. What made me hate this movie was the fact that they used Ben Barnes, a known english actor, they tanned him a bit and used him to portray a colombian young man who was adopted by a north american family. They even made him speak spanish.

I know this is not new. Hollywood does it all the time, they whitewash even the tiniest characters with no importance. However, I cannot help but be mad about it. Cause it wasn’t just that. Alejandro’s (Ben Barnes character) biological mother was from Colombia and was supposed to come with her other daughter to his wedding. She was supposed to be this really religious woman who prayed and stuff. Stereotyping much? Not only that stereotype but his biological sister was supposed to be this really promiscuous girl who jacked off Alejandro’s brother (the one from the north american family, not the colombian. That would be incest and even if they weren’t blood related they still both were Alejandro’s siblings so it was kind of weird)

So it’s like that for South America, we are seen as religious prudes or we are whores who only think of sex. I also know it’s not only with Latinos. Ghost in the Shell (2017), a movie adaptation of a japanese manga is getting boycotted because Scarlett Johansson, one of Hollywood’s most whitest actresses probably is portraying Motoko Kusanagi. A character that should have been given to an actual japanese actress. Which for me was really devastating since I used to admire Scarlett Johansson. Her trying to defend her decision on why she thought it was okay to pursue the role didn’t help at all.

But because I’m latina I thought maybe I told you a little more about other roles that were supposed to be for Latinos but ended up going for american actors.

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zorro

catherine zeta hones.jpg

Though Shakira and Salma Hayek were considered for the role of Elena in Zorro, Catherine Zeta-Jones ended up playing her in both movies Zorro, and The Mask of the Zorro. I do think that these were spanish characters from spain and not South America. even though a lot of South American countries have spanish heritage. (Take me for example half of my family comes from Spain)

  • Al Pacino in Scarface

scarfacedone_1452860i.jpg

In famous movie Scarface he plays the role of Tony Montana, a Cuban drug kingpin.

  • Meryl Streep (and others) in The House of The Spirits

ePNO8iakunz0bhf2trpyPBlphlx.jpg

I love Meryl Streep just as much as the next person however in 1993 she portrayed Clara Trueba in the movie The House of The Spirits based in the book by chilean author, Isabel Allende. The movie is set in Chile and the filmmakers decided to cast Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close and Winona Ryder.

  • Ethan Hawke in Alive

ethan_hawke.jpg

Are you guys familiar with the famous case of the uruguayan rugbiers who got stuck in Los Andes after their plane crashed? It was really well-known because a lot of the rugbiers who survived had to to resort to anthropophagy, meaning they had to eat their dead friends to survive (yeah that’s a  horrible way of putting it) Anyway I guess it was a good plot for a movie because in 1993 Hollywood decided to make the movie casting Ethan Hawke as Fernando ‘Nando’ Parrado, the Uruguayan rugbier.

  • Hank Azaria in The Birdcage

bird1.jpg

In the movie The Birdcage, Azaria portrays the  role of a gay Guatemalan housekeeper. He won a SAG award for his role.

  • Johnny Depp in Before Night Falls

before-night-falls.jpg

In Before Night Falls he plays two cuban characters, Lt. Victor and Bon Bon, a drag queen. Javier Bardem, a spanish actor won an oscar for playing Reinaldo Arenas, the cuban poet and novelist.

  • Madonna in Evita

Evita-DI.jpg

This one hits home. Madonna portrayed Eva Peron, the famous argentine first lady in the movie Evita. I’m not even going to comment on this one.

  • Natalie Wood in West Side Story

ec19423f64cf0dad0a3edc3fefea0f3e.jpg

In this movie, where two street gangs are rivals, on of them is puerto rican and though they did cast Rita Moreno as Anita and that earned her an Oscar, they also casted Natalie Wood as Maria, bummer.

There’s a lot more actors and actresses who have accepted roles that could have easily been portrayed by latino actors, black actors, asian actors. And thought it always comes in question whether the filmmakers or the actors should carry the blame, remember the filmmakers do the casting but the actors also accept the roles.

Hope we read each other soon!

P.S: I don’t hate any of the actors by the way (except Johnny Depp, I don’t like him) I do think that they should have thought about if before accepting those roles.

Looks inspired in Characters

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I thought about showing you some sets inspired in characters I love since, you know, usually people dress up for Halloween 🙂

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-29-49

“Lilo” inspired in Lilo & Stitch also known as one of the movies I can’t watch without crying half of it. This is also a kind of disneybound.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-30-59

“Run Clara and remember” inspired in Clara Oswald from Doctor Who. Honestly Clara dressed so cute, I loved it.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-27-38

“I’m a medical doctor” inspired in Dana Scully from The X-Files. She is one of my favorite characters from TV. I love Scully so much! Plus I don’t know why I always have the urge to re watch this show. It’s honestly one of my favorites so far.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-30-01

“GoGo Tomago” inspired by Big Hero 6. Woman Up!

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-29-15

“Molly Smiles” inspired by Uptown Girls. This movie hit me so hard for some reason. I loved it so much and I always would put the song Jesse Spencer sang on YouTube when I was younger.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-28-39

“Violent ends” inspired by Romeo + Juliet. The movie, the actors, the photography and direction. One of my favorite Shakespeare movie adaptations, plus LEO!!!

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-30-29

“The Mean Reds” inspired by the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Iconic.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-27-15

“Sally” inspired in The Nightmare Before Christmas. This is more like a disneybound. I don’t know if people would know who you are if you went like this to Disneyland but at least you’re not on full costume.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-26-45

“Mary” inspired in… yeah you got it, Mary Poppins! I’ve always wanted to dress up like her for Halloween. Maybe next one.

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-26-19

“Evelyn // The Mummy” I loved this character so much, she was so beautiful and nice and smart! I remember, however, that I used to be in love with the third one, which I think it’s the worst one plus adding the fact that Rachel Weisz was no longer there. The thing is, I had a major crush on her son in the movie, he was cute!

captura-de-pantalla-2016-10-30-a-las-23-25-59

“Mina // Dracula” I love Dracula, maybe because I always loved vampires and others spooky creatures. Vampires had been so badly treated by the cinematic industry but this idea of vampires Bram Stoker had always calls my attention.

What I’m into at the moment

Everytime I want to do a “What I’m into at the moment” post all I can think of is about the shows I’m watching at the moment and the fact that I want to talk about them. But honestly the only thing I can recall of this month was me watching tv shows, that’s it so let’s get into it.

  • Tv Shows

Last month I was totally attached to Bones. This month however I did a major throwback and decided to rewatch some old shows I watched. Not really watched completely though more like stopped watching but watched more than the half. In this case: Dawson’s Creek and The Office.

I decided to rewatch the season before of where I stopped watching that’s why I say I’m rewatching (I’m really not doing that though)

dawsons-creek

I don’t think I ever mentioned it but I’m a sucker for teenage drama. I watched Gossip Girl and The O.C and I remember saying those were my favorite shows (They’re not… well I still love The O.C) When I was around 16 MTV was passing the episodes of Dawson’s Creek in Argentina and I decided to give it a try. I was so in love with it. I loved the characters and the fact that everything about this show was so unrealistic. From the way they talked to the way they looked (They were supposed to be 16 but they looked like 25) I didn’t care, I just loved it. Specially when Joey and Pacey got together, I started loving it even more because, let me tell you something, Pacey is by far one of my favorite characters in television ever. I stopped watching the show in season 4 though because I kinda knew that Joey and Pacey weren’t going to last and I didn’t want it to end so I stopped watching. Silly, I know.

However, a few weeks ago, after almost 5 years and knowing how the show was going to end (Yeah I had to make sure who was Pacey going to end with to continue watching) I decided to keep watching it. The thing is, now I’m about to end season six and I. Don’t. Want. To. I got so attached to the characters and their stories. I love Jen and Joey and I love Jack and I loooove Pacey.and I recently started liking Dawson for the first time after five seasons. Anyway yeah I’m all into this show at the moment. Worst thing is I can’t talk about it with anyone because it’s old and nobody I know watched it.

the-office

I have so much love for The Office. It reminded me of when I watched Parks and Recreation and that show is one of my favorite evers. I have laughed so much with this one though. I started watching a long time ago, I don’t even remember when but I stopped around season 4. I don’t know why I always stop watching series at season 4. And this is not just because I also stopped watching Dawson’s Creek at season 4 but I also stopped watching a lot of shows on S4. Anyways, now suddenly decided that I needed a more laughter in my life so yeah, naturally, I turned to a tv show looking for it.

I’m currently on season 6 now and I watched it every night unlike Dawson’s Creek which I’m trying to delay so it doesn’t have to end, I’m lame.

I’m wishing for a new mockumentary to come because I honestly love them a lot.

  • Music

I haven’t find anything new and to be honest with myself I think my music taste is starting to suck. I used to be this person who would spend hours looking for new good music and now I just kind of play the everyday songs I have. Worst thing is I love listening to music, they’re literally not many times of the day when I’m not listening to music and I’m just starting to get bored of listening to the same stuff.

I also miss 8tracks, I used to find great songs on that app but because now it’s only available on the United States I can’t. You broke my heart, 8tracks, I loved you.

If you feel like it, recommend me music or songs you’re into at the moment.

  • Books

uk-uprooted

I’m not reading anything at the moment but I have Uprooted in my table and I see it every day laying there tempting me to start reading so I might finally give in.

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

Sounds really cool, I was so excited when I found it on the book store. My cover is not as pretty as this one though.

  • Movie

lalalandcover

From the moment I saw the first picture of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone dancing I was rooting for this movie. First of all because I love Emma Stone and I love Crazy, Stupid, Love so I loved them together with Ryan Gosling and they were kinda cool in Gangster Squad. But this movie? I don’t know if you have checked the trailer but it makes me so anxious and excited to see it.

The story is about “A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles.” accordin to IMDB. I’ll leave you the trailer.

Plus Emma singing? I’m so up for this.

  • Clothes & Accesories

I’m all over this skirt I bought in H&M on my summer trip.

And that’s it, that’s all I have for the moment 🙂

See ya!

PS: I have ambiented my blog into a more spooky theme, I love Halloween.

MOVIE REVIEW: Finding Dory

kept swimming

Last week I had the chance to go and see Finding Dory, not only was I excited about it because it’s a Disney/Pixar movie but also because Dory has a special place in my childhood, I still remember being 7 and going to see Finding Nemo in theaters.

Let’s talk about the movie and try not to spoil anything. Like the title clears it out this movie is about Dory and her journey. As you may know she has short-term memory and though she remembers Nemo and Marlin because she sees them every day her childhood and origin are a mystery to her… until she does remember something, she gets a glimpse of memory of the past that takes her to the idea that she had a family and she needs to find them. With that, Dory , Nemo and Marlin start a new adventure full of new charming characters and really cool places.

If I had to choose between the first and the second one I think I definitely would stay with this one. First of all because although Finding Nemo is part of my childhood my sister was the one who was more obsessed with it. See I have a complicated relationship with Pixar movies and only now I’m starting to really value them. When I was young I used to love them but I would get tired of them really quickly (except The incredibles, I love that movie) And maybe it was that my sister’s bed was full of stuffed animals in the shape of Nemo, Dory and Marlin or the fact that she used to watch the movie everyday just like I used to watch The Lion King everyday when I was her age, must be a family thing.

I found the movie (I did something there hehe) really dynamic in terms of the spaces it takes place. The new characters were amazing and funny and I was glad that we also got to see old ones like Crush and Mr. Ray. I would however have loved to see those sharks again, they were hilarious. What I also loved about this film is how well handled Dory’s illness is, I got so emotional with it. It’s funny how a movie without any major tragedy like brutally killing the family at the first part of the movie (ahem, Finding Nemo, ahem) can make me cry like a baby… or maybe that’s just me I see a bit of emotion in a scene and I’m already crying, you have to always have in mind you’re reading a review of a person that literally cries during all of The Lion King. Yeah, not just Mufasa’s death, ALL the movie, even in Hakuna Matata.

The colors of the movie also caught my attention a lot, I feel the need to point it out because some scenes had really beautiful art. And finally but not less important the soundtrack and the song at the end on the credits, simply incredible. I saw the movie two times and even in the second one I stayed listening to Sia’s Unforgettable (cover) because it was really beautiful (and is now on my Apple Music songs)

I’ll leave it here for you to listen cause I really, really loved it.

What I’m into at the moment

Hey lovely people! This was supposed to be an update post about what’s going on with me but I then thought it was going to bore you to death so I decided to do a “What I’m into at the moment” post, it’s kind of like a favorites of [insert month] but because I can’t wait til the end of the month and I never do those kind of post I’m going to do this, why am I explaining this to you? No idea just go with it.

So because of exams and university I haven’t been able to do many things, however I’m going to try to list my favorite things at the moment for you.

  • TV Shows

I don’t know why but these past months I haven’t been able to update myself with any tv show I watch, not even daredevil, my favorite ever. However the only thing I can watch at the moment is Grey’s Anatomy, I’m currently on season 5.

greys 5

It’s really weird because at first I was really against watching it. My sister came to ask me if she should watch it and I told her not to because everybody died. Two weeks later she started Grey’s and a month later I gave up and started it too. It’s so good but so sad, but soooo good.

Another TV show I’m about to start is Elementary. I tried watching Sherlock from BBC but I honestly couldn’t, and the cast from this show is freaking amazing. I haven’t started yet because of exams but now that I finished those I’ll be getting into it.

  • Music

Since I changed to apple music I stopped having playlists to hear while I walk on the street but seeing as lately I have only been hearing specific songs and passing all the others I made one

Photo Jun 11, 6 29 05 PM.png

Those are it. Come Alive by Foo Fighters and Black Sheep by Metric have been an obsession of mine these past days.

  • Books

I only read the prologue of this book because, you know, exams but I’m really excited to read it.

the secret history

I’ll leave you the goodreads description if you haven’t heard of it.

Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last – inexorably – into evil.

  • Movie

So I’m not into any movie at the moment since I watched Captain America Civil War and X-Men Apocalypse but I could tell you the movies I’m really excited about this and next month

finding dory

I’m so happy the wait is over with Finding Dory, luckily, I get to see it next week!

Ghostbusters-2016

Unlike others I’m really excited for this Ghostbusters movie, all female and Kate McKinnon on it, I love her!

  • Make up

I’m not sure this is make up (because I know nothing about make up) but due to the cold winter upon my country my lips are really dry and they hurt sometimes so my forever companion from Nivea helps me a lot.

nivea peach

  • Clothes

This Levi’s scarf I love so much.

Photo Jun 11, 7 19 16 PM.png

So this are the things I’m into the moment, hope you liked it, if you feel familiar with one of this things comment what you think, or not, you’re free to do whatever you want 🙂

see ya!

Liebster Award

Photo Jun 07, 9 20 59 PM

I’m back with a Liebster Award! I have been trying to post as much as before but just when I decided I was going to try to post every day I got into exams week, yeah talk about timing.

Thank you so much flickbox for nominating me! If you got time go check this blog, it’s pretty awesome.

Photo Jun 07, 9 16 22 PM.png

Let’s see the rules:

  • Thank the blogger(s) who nominated you
  • Answer the 11 questions that the blogger gives you
  • Nominate 11 bloggers of your own choosing
  • Give them 11 questions
  • Let the bloggers know you nominated them

Perfect! The questions are…

1. What is your favourite horror movie ?

I usually  hate horror movies but if I had to pick one I actually liked it would be Psycho

2. If you could be a movie bad guy, which one would you be ?

Wow this one is good, hmm I think I would be Loki from Thor and The Avengers. I’m actually saying Loki because I cannot think of other bad guy at the moment.

3. Would you let a movie crew film in your house ?

yeah! This actually happened to a friend once but it wasn’t a movie it was for a tv show from here.

4. What kind of movie would you like to star in ? Why ?

I’m between action, sci-fi, fantasy and adventure because usually those are the movies I obsess more about.

5. Which movie star should live forever ?

I think Leo DiCaprio is on top of my list here.

6. Would you like to be an actor/actress ? Why or why not ?

If I had talent, wasn’t so shy and had the appearance to attract audience in today’s society (unfortunately this is “important” nowadays) I would totally be an actress. I love movies, entertainment, theatre and all things related to acting, I grew up in it because my mom took a lot of acting classes and I used to go and see her plays.

7. Do you think movies have been developing technology or technology has been developing movies ?

I think is a mix of both. Thanks to technology more movies have been developed and at the same time these movies make us work more on the technology being used to make them so we can improve them.

8. If you were to be an actor / actress, which director would you like to work with ? And actor ?

Humm directors I think it would be Kenneth Branagh, Zack Snyder or Baz Luhrmann and actors… that is really hard because I love a lot of actors but I would choose Robert De Niro or Rachel McAdams

9. Would you rather be in a movie, or be given $500.000 ?

Be in a movie.

10. Think of a boring movie you’ve seen. Is there a way to make it better ?

I can’t think of any boring movie I watched… Most of the times even if it was boring at some point I end up liking them anyways. Recently I watched Now is Good with Dakota Fanning and Jeremy Irons but I couldn’t finish it because I got bored. I can’t say I blame the movie here though because I think I was just a bit tired of the same theme. Maybe in another time I would have loved it.

11. Which movie has the best story ? Tell me about it.

Oh this is so difficult, a lot movies have incredible stories. For now I’m going to say Stardust because it’s one of my favorite fantasy movies. Although for being based in a park attraction I would say the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have a great story.

Hey! this was fun, loved this movie related questions 🙂

Now my questions are:

  1. Favorite movie based on a book?
  2. Favorite snack for a movie?
  3. Book you wish there was a movie adaptation? or book you wish there wasn’t a movie adaptation?
  4. What is going to be your costume for this Halloween? or if you don’t have plans because it’s kinda early who/what would you want to dress as?
  5. Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean or Marvel movies?
  6. If you were in a movie/book what character would you be? (protagonist, best friend, love interest, etc…)
  7. When a movie based on a book comes out you are usually the person who already read the book or the person who is going to read the book after seeing the movie?
  8. A TV movie you liked?
  9. Think of your favorite character from a book, which actor/actress would you choose to portray them?
  10. Would you rather be the director of the movie the book is being adapted to or the writer of the book the movie is being adapted to?
  11. Pick a favorite character from a book, which movie character do you think they would have a great chemistry with?

I like this questions a lot!

I’m actually going follow the rules and nominate 11 blogs for once:

Let me know when you do this or if you do this, you don’t have to if you don’t want to of course, but if you do I would love to read the answers.
